Should You Count Calories?

There is no short answer to this question. Obviously, if you are at a calorie deficit you will lose weight. However it can also cause some people more harm than good.

Counting calories can become very tedious. Especially if you are a person who easily becomes obsessive. You may concentrate so much on reaching the exact calorie goal that you stop listening to your body and what it needs. And often times you restrict yourself so much that you end up binging. It can become a vicious cycle.

I do recommend keeping a food journal. It can be helpful to keep track of what you are eating throughout the day. It is more important to eat the right things than how many calories you are consuming. I recommend getting your diet in check before even considering counting calories. Make sure you are feeding your body for energy and health first.

It’s okay to want to reach a certain weight loss or fat loss goal but, your health needs to come first. I too from time to time want to reach a certain goal. So I will track my food. But, if i find myself becoming too worried about each calorie, I will take a break from it.

I used to be one of those people that would obsess about the calorie numbers. Now, I have learned to just listen to my body and eat what will fuel my body. I do extremely heavy and intense workouts. So I have to make sure I am eating a sufficient amount of calories. I have also become so experienced at eyeballing my food amounts that I pretty much know the amount of calories I am consuming. But, I don’t obsess about it.

If you are going to count calories. Use a calorie app like “My Fitness Pal.” It will take the maticulous work out of having to find or figure out the calories yourself. It also allows you to set your own calorie amounts and gives you the ideal amount of calories you would need to either maintain, gain or lose weight.

So to sum it up. Whether or not you should count calories depends on you personally. Yes, it will help with tracking your food and reaching your weightless goals. But, always put your health first.
